How AI Is Changing How Customers Find Local Businesses

The Short Answer
Customers still search, read reviews and ask friends. But more of them now let AI do the first round of research for them: summarizing reviews, comparing options and recommending a short list.
For a local business, that means the information about you online has to be accurate, complete and convincing enough for an AI tool to repeat it.
What's Actually Changed
For years, finding a local business meant typing a search into Google, scanning the map results and clicking through to a few websites. That still happens. What's new is that AI now sits between the customer and the results.
AI answers at the top of Google. Google now shows AI Overviews on a large share of searches. Similarweb estimates that about 43% of U.S. searches showed one in 2026, up from 15% a year earlier. Google also says its conversational AI Mode passed one billion monthly users in May 2026.
AI assistants as advisors. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers said they had used AI tools like ChatGPT to get local business recommendations, up from just 6% the year before.
AI review summaries. The same survey found that 82% of consumers read AI-generated review summaries, and 23% would rely on the summary alone to make a decision.
What This Means for Your Business
AI tools don't invent their recommendations out of thin air. They pull from the information already out there about you: your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews, directory listings, social media and what other sites say about you. If that information is thin, outdated or inconsistent, you're less likely to be mentioned, or you'll be described inaccurately.
The flip side is good news for small businesses. AI tools reward businesses that are clearly described, well reviewed and consistent everywhere. You don't need a national brand budget to do that well in your town.
Reviews Matter More, Not Less
AI summaries are built from your reviews, so the volume, recency and detail of your reviews now shape how you're described. BrightLocal found that 74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last three months, and 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. A steady flow of recent, detailed reviews gives AI tools better material to work with.
How you respond matters too. In the same survey, 80% of consumers said they're likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews, and half are put off by templated or generic responses. Read how reviews affect whether AI recommends your business.
Search Is Getting More Conversational
People are typing and speaking longer questions, like "Who's a good family dentist in Doylestown that takes Delta Dental?" instead of "dentist Doylestown." Pages that answer specific questions about your services, prices, location and process are more likely to match those questions and be quoted in AI answers.
Five Things to Do Now
Complete your Google Business Profile. Categories, services, hours, photos and a detailed description. See our guide to Google Business Profile management.
Give every service its own page. Explain what it is, who it's for, what it costs or how pricing works, and what happens next. See how to optimize your website for AI search.
Build a review habit. Ask every happy customer, and reply to every review in your own words.
Make your details consistent. Your name, address, phone number and hours should match everywhere they appear online.
Show real proof. Photos, video, case studies and team bios help both people and AI tools understand who you are. Learn why video matters more in the age of AI.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SEO dead because of AI?
No. AI tools lean heavily on the same signals SEO has always focused on: clear, useful pages, a strong Google Business Profile, reviews and links from other trusted sites. The work has shifted, not disappeared. Here's how SEO helps a small business.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in the ordinary organic answers. You earn mentions by being well described and well reviewed across the web. Read how to get your business recommended by AI.
Do AI Overviews mean fewer website visits?
For some informational searches, yes. But people who click through from an AI answer have usually already narrowed their options, so the visits you do get tend to be closer to a decision.
