How Reviews Affect Whether AI Recommends Your Business

The Short Answer
When AI tools decide which local businesses to recommend and how to describe them, reviews are one of the strongest signals they have. The number, recency, rating and content of your reviews all shape what AI says about you.
A steady flow of detailed, recent reviews, with thoughtful replies, is one of the best things a local business can do for AI visibility.
Why Reviews Matter So Much to AI
AI tools try to recommend businesses that people are happy with. Reviews are the most direct evidence of that, and they're written in plain language that AI tools can read and summarize. They also contain the details people search for: specific services, towns, staff names and outcomes.
Customers increasingly see your reviews through AI, too. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 82% of consumers said they read AI-generated review summaries, and 23% would rely on the summary alone to decide. That summary is built from what your customers wrote.
What AI Tools Pick Up From Your Reviews
Rating: 68% of consumers require at least four stars, and 31% will only use a business rated 4.5 or higher (BrightLocal, 2026).
Volume: 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
Recency: 74% only care about reviews from the last three months. Old reviews carry less weight with people and paint an outdated picture for AI.
Content: what customers praise or complain about becomes how AI describes you, such as "known for fast service" or "some customers mention long wait times."
Responses: 80% of consumers are likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews, and half are put off by templated replies.
It's Not Just Google
Google reviews matter most for most local businesses, but AI tools draw on other platforms too. Research from Whitespark found that Facebook and Yelp are the review sources most often attached to local listings in Bing's results, which some AI assistants rely on, with TripAdvisor, Angi and industry-specific sites important in certain categories. Know which review sites matter in your industry and keep those profiles active.
How to Build a Review Profile AI Trusts
Ask every happy customer, every time. Make it part of your process: a text or email after the job, a QR code at the counter, a card in the bag.
Make it easy. Send a direct link to your review form so customers don't have to search.
Encourage details. It's fine to ask customers to mention what service they used and where. "Would you mention the kitchen project in Doylestown?" produces far more useful reviews than "Leave us a review."
Spread it out. A steady flow every month beats a burst of 30 reviews and then nothing.
Reply to every review. Thank people by name, mention specifics and sign off as a real person. For negative reviews, stay calm, take it offline and show you fix problems.
Never buy or incentivize reviews. Google prohibits it, and fake or incentivized reviews can be removed or get your profile restricted.
What to Do About Negative Reviews
A few negative reviews won't sink you, and a perfect 5.0 can look less believable. What matters is the overall pattern and how you respond. If the same complaint shows up repeatedly, it will show up in AI summaries too, so fix the underlying issue and say so in your replies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many reviews do I need to show up in AI search?
There's no magic number, and it depends on your category and town. Aim to match or beat the businesses that already appear when you ask AI tools for recommendations in your area, and keep reviews coming in every month.
Can I ask customers to mention keywords?
You can ask them to mention the service they used and where, as long as the review is honest and in their own words. Don't script reviews or offer anything in exchange.
Do review replies help with AI search?
Replies show that a real, attentive business is behind the profile, and they influence customers directly. Specific, thoughtful replies are always worth the time.
