How to Optimize Your Website for AI Search
A checklist for local businesses that want to be found and recommended by AI
Last updated: October 2026
The Short Answer
AI tools read your website to figure out what you do, where you do it and whether you're a good fit for the person asking. The clearer and more specific your site is, the more likely you are to be found, quoted and recommended.
You don't need a new website. Most businesses need clearer pages, better answers and a few technical basics.
How AI Tools Use Your Website
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode for a local recommendation, the tool pulls information from across the web, and your website is one of the most important sources it can check. It looks for plain answers to questions like: What exactly does this business offer? Where? For whom? At what price? How does the process work? Can they be trusted?
If your site is vague, all images or missing key pages, AI tools have little to work with, and they'll recommend a competitor whose site answers those questions clearly.
1. Give Every Service Its Own Page
A single "Services" page with a bulleted list isn't enough. Each main service should have its own page that covers:
What the service is and who it's for
The towns and areas you serve
How pricing works, even as a range or "starting at"
Your process, step by step
Photos or video of the real work
A short FAQ with the questions customers actually ask
2. Answer Questions the Way Customers Ask Them
People ask AI tools full questions: "How much does it cost to replace a roof in Bucks County?" or "Is there a pediatric dentist in Newtown that's open Saturdays?" Use those questions as headings and answer them in the first sentence or two underneath. Direct answers are the easiest thing for an AI tool to quote.
3. Be Specific About Where You Work
Name your town, your service area and the neighborhoods or nearby towns you serve. If you serve several areas, consider a page for each important one with genuinely local details, not the same text with the town name swapped. See our Newtown and Montgomery County pages for examples.
4. Show Proof of Real Experience
AI tools and customers both look for evidence that you're the real thing:
Owner and team bios with real photos
Project galleries, case studies and before-and-afters
Licenses, certifications, awards and memberships
Reviews and testimonials (real ones, with permission)
Video of your people and your work. Read why video matters more in the age of AI.
5. Keep Your Business Details Consistent
Your business name, address, phone number and hours should appear on your site, usually in the footer and on a contact page, exactly as they appear on your Google Business Profile and other listings. Mismatches make it harder for AI tools to be sure they have the right business.
6. Cover the Technical Basics
Make text readable. Important information should be written as text, not only inside images or graphics.
Add structured data. Business schema markup (LocalBusiness) labels your name, address, hours and services in a format machines read easily. Many website platforms and SEO tools can add it.
Make it fast and mobile-friendly. Slow, broken pages are harder to crawl and lose visitors.
Don't block search engines. Check that your site settings and robots.txt aren't accidentally hiding pages.
Use clear page titles and descriptions that say what the page is about and where.
7. Keep It Current
Out-of-date hours, discontinued services and old prices get repeated by AI tools. Review your key pages every few months and add a "last updated" date where it helps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special "AI pages" on my website?
No. The pages that help AI tools are the same pages that help customers: clear, specific and honest. There's no separate set of rules to game.
Does blogging help with AI search?
Helpful articles that answer real customer questions can. Generic posts written to fill a calendar usually don't. Quality and specificity matter more than volume.
How do I know if it's working?
Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask each month and track whether you're mentioned. Read how to get your business recommended by AI, or see our AI search optimization services.
